I’m drilling a borehole to heat and cool my off-grid garden office using ground source energy — but at 4 metres down, I hit solid sandstone, and the DIY methods I’d used so far just couldn’t cut it.

In a previous video, I built a basic airlift drilling system which made it through the soil and clay — but this rock layer brought everything to a halt. In this episode, I try several different techniques before finally building a 3.8m tall borehole rig with a 1HP motor, gearbox, and winch to help push deeper into the ground. My goal is to hit at least 12 metres for a functioning geothermal loop.

In the next video, I’ll be putting the finished rig to work and (hopefully!) drilling straight through the rock. You know when I purchased the drilling fluid from a company in the north of England he looked at me as if to say 'That will be harder than you realise'.
