Singlet oxygen is a special excited version of normal molecular oxygen. In solution two singlet oxygen molecules crash into each other and release a flash of light which we see as a red glow. Today we explore two variants of a reaction that can produce this special excited state in what ends up being the worlds scariest glow stick reaction and an interesting example of luminescence that doesn't use a fluorescent dye.

Outside of this reaction, singlet oxygen is something that's pretty pervasive in the natural world. Lots of compounds when exposed to light will convert normal oxygen to the singlet form. It also is one of the main reactive oxidant species that antioxidants in healthy foods protect against as it forms in our bodies.

A HUGE thank you to NileRed as this video wouldn't have been possible without him. If you aren't already, go subscribe to his channel, it's amazing!
