Hot spring-type gold deposits with compelling evidence of mineralization within a few hundred of the surface have been recognized in both active and fossil hot spring systems by geologists. Episodes of gold mineralization in the shallow hot spring environment are related in time to hydrothermal eruption events like the one at Yellowstone. These eruptions result in vent breccias and peripheral stock work zones in gold deposits. They are caused by large but short-lived over pressurization in a geothermal reservoirs, and by these explosions induce hydraulic fracturing which then evolves into hydrothermal eruptions if driven through to the surface. The maximum available energy in hot, shallow reservoirs is easily sufficient to break large amounts of rock and drive such eruptions.
