How to live a life that (actually) matters

I’m Andres Acevedo, and this is The Market Exit. In this essay, I explore a big idea from historian and author Rutger Bregman: moral ambition.

Most of us want to do something meaningful with our lives. But too often, talented people end up in jobs they secretly believe are meaningless, or they chase ambition without idealism. Others care deeply about the world but lack the drive to create real change.

Rutger argues that what the world needs is the combination of both ambition and idealism. In our conversation, we explore why so many people get stuck in unfulfilling work, the six myths that hold us back from making a difference, and how ordinary people throughout history have risen to the occasion when it mattered most.

We also look at what it means to be morally ambitious today, and how to focus on causes that are sizable, solvable, and sorely neglected—like biodiversity loss, factory farming, and global health.

In this essay, music and sound was done by the talented composer Daniel Angelucci. More of his work is available here: dadacomposer.com
