In this video, you'll see how to teach Static Robot Frame Transforms.

Bolt a new sensor onto a robot and its software has no idea the sensor is there — you have to tell the robot exactly where the new part sits relative to something it already knows. That single declaration of “the sensor lives here, at this fixed offset” is all it takes, and once announced it’s remembered for good, ready for any other part of the system to use.

Learning Points:
✅ Build a small, single-purpose node whose only job is to announce where a new sensor bracket sits on the robot.

✅ Keep the sensor’s position and tilt in a simple settings file rather than the code, so moving the sensor means editing a few numbers and nothing more.

✅ See the new frame appear instantly as a coordinate marker in RViz and confirm its position is correct with built-in inspection tools.

✅ Run the very same setup unchanged on both the simulated and the real robot.

============================

[For Robotics Teachers Open Class], a weekly series of videos by The Construct Robotics Institute, aims to make robotics education easier by helping teachers teach a wide range of robotics topics through hands-on practice.

Each session provides a ROS-based project (referred to as ROSJECTs 🦾 📁) for all attendees, including notebooks, code, and robot simulations. Led by ROS expert Desire, you'll see how robotics teaching and hands-on practice come together in real time.

We're excited to share this series with you! If you have questions or want to explore new topics, drop us a comment below.
