This was a tour I took in 2002 of the Fort Knox Gold Mine near Fairbanks Alaska. The video quality is what you'd expect from 20 years ago, sorry about that!

The Fort Knox Mine is that largest gold producer in Alaska. It pulls ore from two open pits and processes most of the material on-site in a series of ball mills. Milled ore is then chemically treated to separate the gold, which is smelted into bars on-site.

The mine opened in its current form in the mid-1980s at the site of a former shaft mine. It is expected to stay open into at least 2030. The mine processes about 100,000 tone of rock per day and has produced over 8 million ounces of gold. The ore is relatively low-grade, but large-scale industrial processing means it can still make a profit.
