Helicopter Extraction of a 50-Tonne Gemstone Boulder!

In Part 1 of this adventure, we flew by helicopter high into the mountains with a blasting crew to tackle a MASSIVE 50-tonne boulder loaded with Iolite! After drilling and loading it with explosives, we BLASTED the huge boulder into pieces small enough to eventually get off the mountain.

Now it’s time for the extraction!

Over the last week, the guys have been hard at work sorting and loading the blasted material into huge bags. And this isn’t just ordinary rock. Mixed throughout the debris is beautiful Iolite gem rough, incredible lapidary material, and some seriously high-end crystal specimens!

Today I’m heading back up the mountain to watch the spoils of our adventure finally come down. A helicopter will lift bag after bag of gemstone-bearing rock off the mountain and deliver it to the waiting flat deck below.

After all the planning, drilling, blasting and hard work, we finally get to see just how much material that giant boulder produced!

From a 50-tonne boulder on the side of a mountain to bags full of potential gemstones — what an adventure!
