I tend to use a lot of 2nd-hand products on this channel, including behind the scenes to do the filming! Right now my main camera is a Sony Handycam HDR-CX440 that I found 2nd-hand. I also recently bought a used Canon Vixia HF10, so I decided to see how the two compare.

On paper, the Canon has better video specs:
Sony HDR-CX440 Canon Vixia HF10
Sensor: 1/32" 1/5.8"
Resolution: 2.9 Megapixel 3.3 Megapixel
Zoom: 30x Optical 12x Optical
Light: 6 lux 3 lux
Battery: 1240mAh Up to 3000mAh
Memory: 8GB (plus Micro SD) 16GB (Plus SD Card)

The Canon also offers more physical features and expansion options, including:
- Hot shoe
- Built-in light / flash
- External mic jack
- Threaded lens adapter

However, the Sony has a better zoom range, better wide-angle lens, and is much more user friendly and convenient. The Canon is a little clunky and awkward to hold and operate. It also has more hoops to jump through when downloading video onto your computer.

Personally, I prefer the Sony Handycam, but I'll keep the Canon Vixia around as a backup for when my clumsiness inevitably destroys the Sony. I might also use it for scenes where I need an external mic or a specialty lens.
