Use a Table Saw? Make one of these

We’ve been wanting to make our own push stick for a little while and wanted to come up with a simple way to make it adjustable. We based our design partially on our favourite style of push stick (from John Heisz) and added a ledge on the back where a dowel can be held. This is just friction fit in place and can be easily adjusted with a tap on the bench. We also made the handle a little more comfortable to hold and added another notch on the front for additional function.

There is a link to the free template below if you want to make one of your own. We suggest using 18mm plywood as this gives enough thickness for the 10mm dowel. Try to ensure the dowel is a tight fit. Ideally it should be difficult to move by hand.

We used HDPE in this video and this works well because HDPE is a super rigid material with no grain, therefore this makes it very safe as a push stick. The bright colours also make it easy to spot! Ideally, you want to try and avoid natural wood for push sticks in case they were to fail by splitting along the grain. Plywood (or HDPE!) is a great material as it is strong in multiple directions. We used all of the offcuts from the HDPE Stool and HDPE Coffee Cup Carrier videos. If you haven’t seen them then be sure to check them out. The sanding is not at all necessary, especially for a push stick, however uncovering that amazing marbling is very addictive and we like the things we make to look as good as they can.
