I tried making a dorodango with air-dry clay after getting your request!
Air-dry clay isn’t actually real clay. It’s an artificial material made with things like paper fibers and binders, so the particles don’t compress into a dense surface — which means it doesn’t develop that beautiful shine.
It also cracked while drying, and only a very slight shine came through.
But honestly? I didn’t mind the texture at all. The finish is different, but there was something about it I really liked — it has its own quiet charm!
That’s what makes dorodango so interesting — the material changes everything. I hope you enjoy exploring and comparing for yourself 😊
