Air source heat pumps are rapidly replacing gas boilers in homes around the world. But they typically use refrigerants that can be potent greenhouse gases. Now a team at the Ames Laboratory in the USA has developed a novel method using a technology that could replace refrigerant gases in heat pumps completely.
