The Apache Rescue Gun was sold in the 1960s as "The Most Versatile Gun In the World". It could fire distress flares, tear gas, animal repellent, insect killer, perfume, fire starter, fire extinguisher, and more! This was truly an all-American product, promising to solve all your household problems by shooting them! The Cold War and James Bond era probably added to the popularity of all-in-one gadgets like this, which could be used at home, camping, or in your car, boat, or plane.

Flare / tear gas guns like this dropped off the market in the mid-1970s after new laws limited their sales. You can still find older ones at estate sales and antique stores, although the old cartridges aren't always reliable! I tested a few vintage flares, which worked OK. I definitely wouldn't use this in a real emergency, as it's too old and unreliable. I also wouldn't use the tear gas or some of the other cartridges sold for it. Even if they were considered "safe" in the 1960s, that was the era before safety was invented, so who knows what chemicals are in there!

Thanks to @TheLazyhunter for testing the mystery cartridges!
