It might surprise you that human embalming wasn't just done by the Egyptians. It is still done when a body is not going to be cremated or buried soon. That is often as a result of families taking a while to arrange a funeral, or when the body is going to be viewed at a wake.
My brother is an undertaker who specialises in embalming, and I thought you might like to see what's in his van. I didn't delve in too deep, as I really don't want to know what's in his big black leather doctor-cases.
When a body is being viewed, it will also be given cosmetic treatment to make it look "lifelike".
I think the chemicals shown are diluted and then the blood is displaced out of the body to be replaced by the preservatives.
