Researching new locations is important - because in most situations, once you find some gold, it doesn't grow back and there are diminishing returns. That is the trap of going to the same once successful places over and over. Pounded Patches mean you need to do some Exploration. On my most recent trip, I found some trash, but no gold. It was big sign that I need to do some research and find new places to do prospect.
There are a lot of resources out there:
State geology and mining reports;
Local history books;
topographic maps; lidar images;
and of course, Google.
