YNAB has three primary columns on the budget screen: Budgeted, Activity, and Available. I'll be breaking down each one of these columns and how it relates to the traditional envelope budgeting method.
When you create a category in YNAB, that's the equivalent of pulling an envelope out of your pack and writing the category name on the outside of it. A goal in YNAB is the same as simply writing the amount you'd like to put into that envelope each month.
It's not until you move money from To Be Budgeted to the Budgeted column that you actually add money into the envelope itself. The activity column shows how much you've spent from that envelope this month and lastly, the available column shows you what's leftover.
Be sure to check out the video where I go in-depth on all these aspects to make sure you understand exactly how YNAB works.
