Complex 555 based frequency or PWM generator

This seemingly simple module took more time than usual to reverse engineer, as it uses unusual circuitry to allow a variable frequency stream of pulses or alternatively a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal.

The main purpose of the unit seems to be for providing adjustable speed and direction control to a stepper motor driver, but I'm not sure why it also has the PWM option. Perhaps for servo position control?
