Rust bluing is a very simple technique that allows you to coat a piece of steel in a hard protective black coating. It's basically like rusting it in advance so it can't rust more. It converts a weak red iron oxide layer into a hard permanent magnetite layer. And all it needs is a little vinegar, salt, and hydrogen peroxide.
