Recovering large, coarse gold nuggets is a very exciting treasure hunt, and the quest for large gold is often the “holy grail” of the independent prospector, no matter what the tools or equipment that are being used to find placer gold. Looking too closely at big gold can really give a person a bad case of gold fever!

All coarse placer gold originates from the erosion of primary hard rock gold deposits. It is import to have stable growth conditions to form large nuggets - this is the Big gold nugget geology. Rocks and the veins they hold break down and weather over long periods of time. The veins release their gold and the forces of erosion concentrate the gold in some places but not in others.
