When you can see past the hype and buzz-words, a typical gym energy drink is just a standard high-sugar fruit flavoured drink with a pinch of salt to replace "electrolytes" lost through sweat.
By making your own you save lots of money, get a fully customisable drink and avoid adding hundreds of plastic bottles to landfill every year.
For a 500ml or 16oz bottle you will need:-
3 or 4 heaped teaspoons of standard white sugar.
A pinch of standard table salt.
Half a level teaspoon of citric acid.
Half a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda / sodium bicarbonate / baking soda.
Optionally you can add a drip or two of concentrated flavouring and food colour if you want.
Put all the ingredients in a plastic drinking bottle and top it up with cold water, then put it in the fridge until needed.
