You can learn to identify rocks and minerals, and the skill of mineral identification is one well worth learning. The basic characteristics of minerals include: crystal shape, Hardness, luster, Chemistry, density, cleavage and color. Each one of these characteristics is an indicator of what the mineral is. Buy a book that will list the various characteristics and help you identify minerals. My prospecting book has a little of this, but there are mineral guides that focus on the topic. It’s not just about color: a lot of people focus on it because its so easy to see. But many minerals come in multiple shades and colors.
