What The Heck Is A Bathythermograph?

I bought this interesting science instrument at a surplus auction recently. While it looks like a steampunk torpedo, it's actually a bathythermograph, a device for measuring water temperature deep under the ocean. They have a fascinating history going back to WW2, when they were used to measure ocean thermoclines and currents for submarine operations. Sonar systems don't always work between different temperature gradients, so knowing where those temperatures changed underwater was important for both submarines and surface ships.
