The growing adoption of electric vehicles is driving the increasing demand for lithium, nickel and cobalt — critical metals used for lithium-ion batteries in the automotive, energy and electronics industries. We’ve talked about Lithium, now I will talk about Cobalt and Nickel – the other battery metals. Cobalt is a transition metal that is hard, brittle, lustrous and silver-gray. Cobalt is primarily used in lithium-ion batteries. Nickel is used in steel alloys and other applications, including the fast-growing rechargeable battery sector. Both are important metals for which we produce only a tiny fraction of what we use in the US, and much of what we import is obtained from countries who would be considered as enemies. We need to find more.
