What was it actually like to mine gold as an old-time miner?

In this video, I head into an old reef mining area and try to experience a small part of what historic gold mining was really like. Using a record box and nothing but good old-fashioned manual labour, I move 10 wheelbarrows of paver out of an old mine area to see just how hard these early miners had to work.

There’s no excavator, no loader and no modern mining equipment — just a record box, a wheelbarrow and a whole lot of hard work.
