Building a 5" MultiBreak Shell (Part 3, Ignition, 5/15/2010)

After half a year's wait my 5" multibreak finally got into the air - Mostly. As can be seen in the video, two of the three breaks failed in the gun. This could be due to one of two faults so far as I can guess: It could have either been that the spolettes of the first two shells (which were made in high humidity) dried and cracked while in storage for so long, or, the shell simply could have given in to the forces of acceleration and folded in the middle. Both of those things could have caused the type of failure seen in the video, which is, the first two shells igniting immediately, and the last shell surviving until the spolette burned its full duration.

Either way it was rather disappointing. Improvements will just have to be made for the next one. I was quite pleased with the effect of the final break of tigertail and magnesium inserts. I may need to try that again without so much other clutter in the sky. It was nice to finally get a shell in a gun at an MPAG shoot if nothing else.
