In 1990 a courier was robbed in the street carrying 292 million pounds of bearer bonds, a unique financial instrument that makes the bond repayments payable to whoever is physically holding the piece of paper, almost like cash.

In today’s prices this robbery was equivalent to 760 million pounds which is worth approximately 760 million American dollars.

Thirty years later this is still the single largest amount ever stolen in a street robbery, and it will likely hold that title forever because bearer bonds have become a very unpopular financial instrument because of their propensity to be used for money laundering and the risk of theft they pose.

These bonds were eventually recovered from different locations all around the world and it was unlikely that the thieves were able to cash in any of the bonds because their heist drew far too much attention.
