I went to Ax-Man surplus again and picked up this... thing. It looks like a prop from a Sci-Fi movie, but is actually an early remote thermometer device! After some cleanup and fiddling I even got it to work!

This is a Leeds & Northrup model 8623 from the 1960s. It measures temperature by matching an internal light source to the flame color and then reading off the scale dial. Some additional information is available here: https://physicsmuseum.uq.edu.au/optical-pyrometer-model-no-8622

The weird liquid-filled H-shaped thing inside is apparently a "Standard Cell", which used to be a way to measure voltage very accurately. More information here: http://physics.kenyon.edu/EarlyApparatus/Electrical_Measurements/Standard_Cell/Standard_Cell.html

I might pull this device out again if I try more aluminum casting, as it could help me fine-tune my mini can-melting furnace setup.
