I'm Andres Acevedo, and this is The Market Exit. In this essay, I explain why I didn't vote for the party I like the most. And why one in five Swedish voters do the same. The reason is a single sentence in chapter three of the Swedish constitution: a party that doesn't reach four percent of the national vote gets no seats at all, however many people voted for it.
I look at how proportional and majoritarian systems differ, how far some countries have taken thresholds (Turkey's ten percent rule threw away over fourteen million votes in 2002) and at the Netherlands, which has no threshold, fifteen parties in parliament, and one of the best-functioning democracies in the world.
