Late last week (in a fairly obvious response to escalating trade tensions on their southern border) Canada announced that it would be accepting an invitation to join the European Union as… “an associate member”… whatever that means…
But then; just a day later, it was also proposed that their fellow commonwealth brothers (Australia and New Zealand) could tag along to this party as well.
Now IF these plans do actually go through they could have massive consequences for global trade, global finance, and the global balance of power, and on top of just being slightly embarrassing to us here in America, it's probably only going to make our own compromised position even more dangerous.
But well… There are also a lot of unanswered questions.
The European Union was specifically designed to enable free trade and the free movement of labor between countries… in Europe…
all (realistically) being spurred along by aggressive trade policy coming from their southern border… and well that's fair enough, but this is also a very long term solution to a problem that probably won't be around in two years time…
And reportedly, in their race to get a fancy sounding headline… These two groups seem to have forgotten to discuss this idea with their own people first…
So well we will get to that… as well as what this all means for Countries like the UK who already took the exact opposite step just a few years ago…
But in the meantime, right here at home, we should probably also ask, if this move means we have successfully chased away our most loyal allies for good…
