Most of the placer deposits found in New Mexico are derived from gold-bearing Tertiary intrusive rocks, specifically stocks, dikes and other intrusions of monzonite and related rocks. These gold deposits occur chiefly in veins, shear zones and brecciated zones in the intrusive rocks, but are also found as veins and even replacement deposits in the adjacent sedimentary rocks. During the decade between 1860-70, many important placer deposits were found and worked, including the rich deposits at Elizabethtown in Colfax County, and Pinos Altos in Grant County. Many discoveries of rich lode gold deposits then followed as a result of these placer discoveries.
