It doesn't matter what you're writing, but it's especially true if you're writing a screenplay, but you are wasting time writing character backstory. Most of it won't end up in the script anyway, and all your time screenwriting will be spent doing things not related to screenwriting. Creating backstory for any character in your screenplay is going to usually result in you wasting your time. So let's not do that.
