How Much Aluminum is in 100 soda cans? Not just what do 100 empty soda cans weigh, but how much useful aluminum is there in these cans? There is a lot of paint and plastic that goes into a beverage can. A can without the aluminum is basically a fragile, thin plastic bag. That coating is totally necessary because aluminum is a very active metal. You can’t use the paint, or plastic liner coatings, as those will burn off in melting. Some metal oxidizes in the melting process. A lot of a can’s weight will end up as useless dross – the scum floating on the molten metal.
So how much of it is actually useful aluminum? – Take a look at this video to see the numbers I got.
