Variable power controller for various loads

This module is a classic phase angle controller suited to some specific types of motors (mainly universal motors with carbon brushes) and many simple resistive loads like heaters and tungsten lights.

It uses phase angle control, which involves turning a triac on at a variable position on each half of the mains sinewave. This is electrically noisy, so it's good practice to add a suitably rated filter.

Note that the failure mode of a triac is usually to short out, and as such, there should be extra layers of safety for loads like heaters to prevent uncontrolled heating. That could be a simple inline thermal switch set for a worst case temperature.
