Up until 1988 this Cold War radar base protected America from Soviet bombers. The abandoned Calumet Air Force Station was recently purchased by a group who plans to restore and re-use the facility. It's now known as the Open Skies Project, and the owners offer free tours in the summer months to curious visitors (with prior permission!)

We got the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour, including the bomb-proof control center building, one of the radar towers, and the underground fallout shelter bunker.

The base also had its own residential neighborhood, recreational facilities, dorms, mess hall, medical center, chapel, repair shops, power plant, heating plant, and everything needed to run a small self-contained community. After the military moved out, it was used as a reform school. In the mid-2000s it was abandoned and became a ghost town perched on top of a remote mountain.
