Ancel BM200 car battery monitor teardown

This unit is designed to be stuck to your car battery and connected to its terminals. It then sends voltage, temperature and movement data via bluetooth to an app on your phone to help you test and monitor things like battery health (the ability to store charge and supply high current) and whether the vehicle's charging system is performing properly.

For short term diagnostic use in multiple vehicles, it's possible to use it in a plug-in format. Possibly in the OBD port.

The design and construction suggests that Ancel's designers have experience of making things resilient enough for automotive use. The case is very well sealed, and even the wires are sealed against moisture ingress between their cores.

The app lets you select between lead acid or lithium battery chemistry.

The Bluetooth functionality works well, with the unit connecting quickly to its app once assigned. Voltage accuracy is very acceptable.

All in all, it seems quite a well designed unit, although I can't vouch for its long term performance.

This item is a cut above the usual tat I explore, so its price is a bit higher, but still good value for the functionality at around £16. It may also appear as a bundle deal item.

There is also a BM200 pro that has a separate wirelessly connected display and doesn't require an app.
