What Surprise Is Hiding on My New Claim?

Dayna and I are exploring our new peridot claim for the very first time, and we came in with an experiment in mind!
We know the peridot from this area is incredibly resistant to weathering. So rather than just breaking open basalt looking for fresh olivine xenoliths, we decided to try something different. We collected a large quantity of topsoil from in and around the basalt bluffs to take back to the gem jig. The question was simple: after all that rock has weathered away, what crystals are still hiding intact in the soil?
Of course, Dayna and I aren't very good at walking past interesting rocks without breaking a few open! 😂 While collecting our samples, we got distracted cracking into the basalt to see what the xenoliths inside might hold.
And that distraction paid off BIG TIME.
Dayna opened up one particularly incredible pocket absolutely loaded with beautiful gem-quality peridot. Some of the crystals appear to be facet grade, with potentially thousands of dollars worth of gemstone packed into a single pocket!
But that's only half the experiment. We still have buckets of soil to process through the gem jig to find out what has been sitting beneath our feet all this time.
What surprises are hiding on our new claim? Let's find out!
