Lithium is a soft, silvery metal, so soft it can be cut with a knife like butter. It has the lowest density of any metal. It reacts vigorously with water, generating flammable hydrogen gas. Lithium is mined from three different deposit types: lithium brine deposits, pegmatite lithium deposits and sedimentary lithium deposits. Historically, Pegmatite based hard rock lithium production dominated the lithium market, but beginning about 70 years ago production began to switch to desert dry lake brine sources. Either way, the world needs more lithium!
