Stockholm, the beautiful capital city built on islands between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea, faces infrastructural challenges because of its geography. For over 50 years, politicians have been discussing the possibility of building a bypass road around the entire city. This video explores the Stockholm Bypass project, a 20 km long new motorway west of Stockholm and Sweden's most expensive highway of all time. The project began in 2014 and will continue for another 9 years with an estimated total cost of approximately SEK 38 billion (≈EUR 3,7 billion).
The construction of the Stockholm Bypass project, which includes a tunnel that will go under Lake Mälaren and through the royal island Lovön, is expensive because of the tunnels, which cost a lot of money to build. It is also challenging to build in metropolitan areas, which adds to the project's cost. The bypass is being built as a branch from the current E4 at Sollentuna, north of Stockholm, and will have high traffic flows of 120,000 vehicles per day on the Stockholm Bypass and 80,000 vehicles per day on the E18 highway, affecting the living environment for those who live in Hjulsta and Tensta, low-income areas.
The project's assessment reveals that roads are laid much more often built on the surface in areas with a high proportion of immigrants or a much lower average income. Meanwhile, near high-income areas and areas with a low proportion of immigrants, tunnels are built more often. Although there are formal laws and regulations, such as Natura 2000 areas and world heritage sites like Drottningholm on the island Lovön, an assessment is made of different living environments, which takes into account the people who live and use different places.
In this video, we examine the project's impact on different communities and ask the question, who benefits from Sweden's most expensive highway ever?
