Reduction firing pottery does two things, it makes the red iron paint turn black and it also makes the clay turn white, resulting in beautiful pottery with maximum contrast between the painted designs and the background. Here is how I go about reducing my pots in a pit fire. Note: these are green ware pots going in, southwestern pottery is traditionally single fired.
