Uranium is a critical and strategic element. The most common uses of uranium today exploit its unique nuclear properties. Uranium-235 which makes up only about 0.7% of the total is the one naturally occurring fissile isotope – for any element. This atom can be made to split up into two fragments, releasing a few neutrons and a lot of energy in the form of heat. This makes it useful in the production of nuclear power as well as nuclear weapons. Uranium is the largest element that is naturally occurring in amounts more than just tiny traces. Uranium is found in low levels within all rocks, soil, and water, and is the 51st most abundant element in the Earth's crust.
We need uranium for our nuclear reactors, and the US produces less than 1 percent of what we need. In this video, I will cover the geology of uranium deposits, minerals that contain uranium and prospecting for uranium ores.
