Rather than a traditional TV, I use a surplus digital projector in my living room. That way the entire far wall is the TV (about a 9ft screen!). It's cheaper than a real TV, and while the resolution is a little lower, you can't tell the difference from back on the couch. Plus it makes a great cat toy, the cats love chasing the mouse pointer around the wall!
In this video I address a few pros and cons of this setup. It's just a quick review / demo without much DIY stuff. The only real work that went into this setup was the shelf for the projector and running some wires for the speakers.
