Here’s a brief explanation: I use sterling silver to refine gold. I recover the silver from that and melt it into shot. The shot is about 98% silver, the rest is mostly copper. I add the 98% silver shot into the anode filter basket. The filter is made of Dacron material. I use an anode electrode bar cast into a 10 gauge copper wire (that’s connected to the positive side of the DC power supply) to pass an electric current through the 98% impure silver in the anode filter basket. The current flow causes the impure silver in the anode filter basket to dissolve. The dissolved silver passes through the Dacron filter and into the silver nitrate electrolyte. Any insoluble impurities get trapped in the filter and are saved for later processing. The silver ions (dissolved silver) travel through the silver nitrate electrolyte and deposit as high purity elemental silver on the inside of the stainless steel bowl. The stainless steel bowl is the cathode and it is connected to the negative side of the DC power supply, thus completing the electrical circuit for the cell to operate.
