Fact check: Does a higher cadence result in less overstride?

“If a runner has too much overstride (lands too far in front of themselves), they should increase their cadence, as a higher cadence automatically reduces overstride.”
This is yet another of those things I often hear runners and running coaches say, but it’s not nearly as clear-cut a relationship as many people think. A shorter stride certainly does not mean less overstride than a long stride.
How do I know this? Well, for twelve years I’ve carried out thousands of tests that measure exactly this.
